Suli! any news about those pics? :P you don't have to share them here, just email me one or smthg, would be a really nice souvenir to keep from that day

I'm not bumping this for only that :P
this is a video made by that concert's organizers

it contains most of Why Wait

Also I read this and found it slightly interesting
http://www.digitalpr...un-comes-out/1/

The region’s hottest entertainment venue, the Yas Arena, had its first taste of Arabia last month thanks to a double billing that included Columbian /Lebanese pop star Shakira and Egyptian singer Amr Diab. S&S finds out how Flash pulled off the superstar balancing act.

Flash Entertainment’s Yas Arena has quickly become the venue du jour for international acts performing in the Gulf – but until recently, catered to the largely Western expat market, rather than to the local Arab music scene.

But that all changed when the promoter announced a double act – with Shakira returning to Abu Dhabi to perform for a second time, this time alongside Amr Diab.

The change in strategy was a success, with the show selling out and attracting a different type of punter than usual.

“In the Arena we’ve never really presented an Arabic act, so the opportunity to work with Amr was one we welcomed and it turned out to be a great experience for us and the audience,” explains Flash operations director Lee Charteris.

“I think we attracted a lot of people who perhaps had not been before. And I think the pairing with Shakira, with the Arabic connection, worked really well. It made that billing really, really strong.”

The show also proved that the local concert-going audience will support repeat performances by the same artist, according to Charteris.

“The attendance record speaks for itself. The first time she [Shakira] came we had a great show with her and this time, the offer was there and it felt like a good fit again – especially with the combination with Amr Diab. Sometimes these things just work out.”

And he says he’s optimistic that local audiences will see Shakira for a third time. “As a promoter, we brought an artist back within a relatively short period of time and she did good business – better business – this time around.

And I think she’s progressed as a performer, which is good to see as well. I’m optimistic that we’ll see her here again, and that it will a bigger and better show, with even more people. Because that’s what we’re trying to do here – build a bigger and better events and concert industry,” he explains.

Part of Shakira’s current ‘The Sun Comes Out’ world tour, the Abu Dhabi-stop mirrored many of the production elements fans see internationally.

“We matched a spec as best we could from a show that she’s presenting around the world. Obviously all the equipment was sourced locally, apart from some control and some backline that they brought over from America,” says Charteris.

Known for her dance-moves as much as her singing, Shakira performs a large part of her act in bare feet, which meant installing a stage floor more suited to the task at hand than the standard version.

“She comes with a special dance floor - a high-quality matting that helps her in her dances - so we worked to a spec and covered it for Amr’s performance and then uncovered it when Shakira came out,” he explains.

The high-energy nature of her show also meant that a huge 55 foot thrust was built into the stage, to magnify the audience’s interaction with the pop star, the likes of which Charteris says hasn’t been seen at the Arena before.

“We’ve built thrusts before but it’s not something that’s been requested for a while. We built thrusts for Guns n’ Roses but certainly not on the same level – this was a huge 55 feet into the audience with a huge 12-foot B-stage,” he says.

“I think it worked really well, it effectively puts three times as many people into the front row, so it’s a lot more immersive. It works well for performers and audiences; I think it actually works because it brings Shakira so much closer to so many more people.

When you’re building a show that is that big and you’re expecting that many people to be there, it’s a challenge to make it still seem intimate in a way.”

Shakira started her performance via the pit, walking around the B-Stage and thrust to get “up close and personal” with her fans, something which only added to the atmosphere, according to Charteris.

The “very, very visual” nature of the show saw a huge amount of pre-recorded, pre-programmed content screened on IMAG screens as well as a 6 millimetre rear LED screen that covered almost the entire back wall of the stage, which Charteris says is possibly the most LEDs ever used at a Flash concert.

Another first was the scale of changeover that occurred between Amr Diab and Shakira’s performance.

“There was a fairly hefty changeover of equipment that had to happen in between, because they’re both acts of a certain stature. And they were very different kind of acts – he has 22 performers on stage.

Different controls, different monitors, side-fills had to be reset, different lights were added – so there was quite a lot of technical changes that needed to be made and despite the fact that you’ve rehearsed, engineers will always want to run through line checks and all the other bits and pieces that they do before going live,” says Charteris.

But he dismisses claims that the changeover – which stretched to close to an hour – took too long, leaving audience members restless. “We had a rough idea of what time she was going on and we always knew it would take some time to do the changeover.

There’s no point in going off half-cocked – the artists and the technical team need to be ready. There was a big crowd in the audience and the time in between, after Amr Diab, allowed them to step back, get a drink and socialise with their friends. I think it all worked out fine.”

“Sometimes you’d like the artist to go on 10 minutes earlier,” he admits, before adding: “It’s a feel thing though and we’d always prefer an artist to walk out on stage when they’re feeling it rather than when someone is shouting at them to be there.”

Charteris attributes what he describes as a “smooth” show and transition to a somewhat luxurious rehearsal timeframe.

“We set up and rehearsed Shakira completely the day before – she rehearsed until about 3am on the morning of the show. They arrived and loaded in very early on the day before the event, which gave us the whole day of the show to bring in Amr and allow him to have a good rehearsal and sound check as well.

It worked out perfectly because they both got a good period of time to get comfortable on stage before the actual performance. It’s a luxury you don’t always get, especially when you’re touring, to have so much time to rehearse and prepare.”

And the preparation paid off, according to Charteris, who describes the gig as “one of the best” shows that Flash has done and one that will serve the UAE – and in particular, Abu Dhabi – well as a example of local capabilities to the international concert industry.

“The fact that we can continue to source locally and provide all the equipment that these international artists need, and the fact that we worked with another set of people this time around, because she had quite a lot of new staff, it means that they’ll leave Abu Dhabi thinking what a great experience they had and it means it’s easier to then attract other artists out here,” he says.

Yas Arena’s summer siesta
The Shakira/Amr Diab gig was followed by the first ever Middle East performance of Snoop Dogg at the Yas Arena, closing what has been a hugely busy season for the venue. But that doesn’t mean activity at the site will grind to a halt.

“We’re focussed on changing it – I don’t want people coming there and thinking it’s all the same as the last time they were there. I want it to be different – and better,” explains Charteris.

He says Flash will remove the entire current infrastructure and make some changes ahead of the full-scale start up on the venue again in October.

“We’re going to take everything out and work on lots of aspects of the Arena – we’re working on landscaping, I’m looking at potentially redesigning it a bit and improving it.

We’re working on a whole host of ideas at the moment. It’s a greenfield site – it’s always going to be about entrances, toilets, grass; but I think we can make it even better,” he says.

And it’s this active approach to continuous improvement that has already paid off for the firm, with its pioneering transport from Dubai proving a success and an option that it will potential continue over the next season.

“We parked more cars than we ever have before for Shakira – about 5,500,” explains Charteris. “And it’s all just getting better – infrastructure on the island is getting better, signage is getting better, more people came on buses from Dubai.

We’re in the business of making it better for people to come and enjoy concerts – if we sat around on our laurels that would be foolhardy, we’re trying to make it better each time.”

He adds that this forward approach is also something employed internally within Flash’s operations department, as proved by the recent replacement of production manager JC Saliba, who has moved internationally, with Haidar Shukri.

“Haider was working producing all the shows at the Flash Forum, has come across and is looking after the Arena now. I try to keep moving the guys around; I want to develop the industry and educate the people we have here and part of that is to keep challenging them,” explains Charteris.

“If you’re moving around, working at different venues and on different events, it’s good for the local industry. I’m confident that we’ll go down to zero imports for any kind of help.

Obviously if we get really busy and it’s economically silly to have full-time employees, then we’ll go to third-party hire. But I’m trying to build a well educated, knowledgeable, entertainment-focussed, health and safety conscious workforce that will be able to do these types of events singlehandedly.

And that way, the knowledge is retained here in the UAE, rather than it being a, internationally-based, transient workforce.”

One year ago today, after 9 years waiting, she walked up in front of me, I touched her hand. That's when I had to accept that she's not an angel. She's what perfect looks like <3

It was the best first Shakira concert I could have had, I had great company, Suli, Mazooy and everyone else, we had the perfect spot, the whole day was just unforgettable (well except for Amr Diab, very forgettable.)

Shakira about her new album

"Shakira. Nothing more. A little bit of rock, a little bit of folk, a little reggae and naturally some dance--but as always, and above all, a lot of heart."

I love you so much Shaki! :skyking2:
